Bendix Family Physicians is a full service medical practice providing comprehensive high quality, cost effective, and patient friendly primary care to isolated and underserved members of the City of South Bend, Indiana and its surrounding areas. Located on the City’s Westside, Bendix offers a sliding fee scale based on the 2011 Federal Poverty Levels (FPLs) and renders services without regard to a patient’s ability to pay.
Bendix currently has a full-time Board Certified Family Physician and Advanced Family Nurse Practitioner who treat patients of all life stages.
Bendix is a culmination of an unprecedented and ambitious partnership between SJRMC, Memorial Hospital, and the City of South Bend. Renovations of the former medical office building, which sat vacant for 5 years, began in November 2008. By May 18th 2009, patients were being served.
The City’s Redevelopment Commission and the Board of Public Works donated the property, and SJRMC and Memorial Hospital equally contributed for interior remodeling and reconfiguring the entrance. Nearly $1.2 million went in to furnish and equip the facility, sponsor community health programming, and to underwrite ongoing operational costs.
Upon completion of renovations, the Commission conveyed the facility to CHPSB d/b/a Bendix in exchange for a 10 year commitment for quality health care services and community health education efforts at the site. Bendix takes this commitment seriously and is dedicated to improving current operations and accessing all benefits possible to secure this future. By 2011 year end, Bendix served over 2,700 unduplicated patients.
The Volunteer Provider Network (VPN) was created under the leadership of a team of physicians and community leaders who wanted a better coordinated system of healthcare for low-income, medically uninsured individuals of St. Joseph County.
The VPN is a pool of physicians who donate services to St. Joseph County residents who live at or below 200% of the federal poverty level, and who do not quality for insurance and are not qualified for any form of public insurance with the exception of Medicaid Package E. Individuals may be granted temporary acceptance into the VPN pending the outcome of an application for public insurance.
The VPN provides access to essential health care, including primary physician services, specialty and hospital services, radiology and lab work at no charge to the enrollee while creating an equitable distribution of charity care for VPN community providers.
The VPN Administrative office partners with a number of local health centers in the community who act as access points for the program. The health centers conduct financial screenings to pre-qualify patients, and refer them into the VPN program.
Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center and Memorial Hospital & Health System share the program’s administrative costs. Since it’s inception in November 2004, the generous providers of the VPN program have donated over 36 million dollars of general and specialty care to over 19,000 patients.
